A few weeks ago a friend of mine, who is currently studying abroad in Greece, messaged me and said she had an idea for my blog. She told me about a Broadway show that had actually gone a little mainstream called Hamilton. This isn’t the first time I’d heard of the show, and speaking as the little girl who told people she was going to be a Broadway one day (in fact my fifth grade yearbook says I should have been married on a Broadway stage by now. I’ve already failed my 10 year old self) I was more than intrigued by the prospect. But then life happened and I forgot about it until now. And let me tell you, if I had the funds to rush out to New York right this second to see this show I would.
Coming from the mind of Lin- Manuel Miranda (lyrics, music and book) the musical is inspired by the biography of Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. The show premiered Off-Broadway in February 2015 and transferred to Broadway at the Richard Rogers Theatre in August 2015.
According to an article in The New Yorker the show is “Rooted in hip-hop, but also encompassing R. & B., jazz, pop, Tin Pan Alley, and the choral strains of contemporary Broadway, the show is an achievement of historical and cultural reimagining.” Miranda has said that the cast of the show looks like America now while embodying America of the past, in reference to many notable Founding Fathers being played by African American actors.
The show has received critical acclaim in just a few months, with sold out shows on and off Broadway. As of September 2015 the show had been sold out for most of it’s engagement and it was the second-highest-grossing show on Broadway, behind The Lion King, over Labor Day weekend. The show also reportedly took in over $30 million before it’s official Broadway opening!
